The Crop Report
September feels like a season of transition. The long hot summer days mixed in with some rainy ones have helped our beds thrive, and now we’re at what we call peak harvest season! Be on the lookout for hot & sweet peppers, big juicy tomatoes, okras, kale, garlic, peaches, and plenty more making their way from our five farm sites to our Farm Stand.
Congrats to Our Year Two Summer Teen Graduates!
Our incredible young farmers have wrapped up their 6-week summer program, and what a season it has been! From learning the importance of urban farming in the food security ecosystem to sharing their newfound knowledge at the farm stand, these youth showed hard work, passion, and leadership every step of the way.
We’re so proud that their dedication was recognized and honored by the office of City of Boston Councilor Enrique Pepén and Councilor Julia Mejia for their contributions to the urban farming movement. The future of farming is bright!
Jazz at the Farm
We’re grateful to everyone who joined us last month for an unforgettable night of music, community, and joy; your presence and support made a real difference. Proceeds from this event will help us bring turkeys to families in need during the upcoming holiday season. Here’s to music that feeds the soul and a community that feeds each other!
Thank you!
Art Exhibit
Thank you to all who attended our Call and Response: A Narrative of Reverence to our Foremothers in Gynecology art exhibit in partnership with the Resilient Sisterhood Project. This powerful exhibit and discussion along with your presence honored Anarcha, Betsey, and Lucy; uplifting their voices through art, reflection, and storytelling, and keeping their legacy alive.
Welcome to UFI!
Jessica Tretina
Marketing, Events, and Memberships Manager
Hi, I'm Jessica. I grew up in rural Jamaica and finished high school in Milton. I spent the last 3 years doing the marketing for hunger relief nonprofit Food For Free, and I'm so excited to have started this new chapter with UFI.
I've always loved nature and would roam around my parents' farm with my dogs as a child. Now I enjoy hiking, tending to my houseplants, and experimenting in my community garden plot. Food justice is really important to me, and I believe that everyone deserves to eat nourishing, delicious food that feels like home. When I came to UFI and saw a field of callaloo, I immediately felt at home.
Grow Series
Saturday, September 20th | 12—2pm
Join us for the second-to-last session of our Grow Series in September! We’ll dive into the art of harvesting, share tips for wrapping up the growing season, and help you get the most from your garden before the colder months arrive. Whether your season has been abundant or challenging, there’s still plenty to learn and share. Let’s gather to reflect and keep growing together!
Mackerel Rundown recipe
Ingredients
2 Salt mackerels
Lime
1 Scotch bonnet pepper
Onions
Black pepper
Coconut oil
Plum tomatoes
Bell pepper - optional
Fresh coconut milk, coconut powder or canned coconut milk
Pimento (allspice) - optional
Thyme
Salt, if needed
Instructions
This is an old time Jamaican recipe that each family makes with their own spin on it, so you are invited to do some experimenting with measurements and aromatics to find what suits your taste.
Put a pot of water over high heat and bring to a boil. Meanwhile, wash the fish with water and lime juice to clean and remove some of the salt. Add the fish to the pot and bring to a vigorous boil, then lower heat and simmer for 10-15 minutes, or until the fish is soft and no longer too salty. Drain and rinse with cool water, then debone and break into smaller pieces.
Heat pot over medium heat and add coconut oil. Sautee onion, bell pepper, a sprig of thyme, and some chopped scotch bonnet pepper (or leave your pepper whole and add when adding the coconut milk) for 3 minutes. Add black pepper to taste. Add tomato.
Add fish to onion mixture and gently stir. Add black pepper to taste. Add a generous ½ cup of coconut powder and a little over ½ cup of boiling water to the pan along with pimento seeds and stir gently to combine.
Simmer until custard forms. Check seasoning and adjust to taste.
Serve with boiled provisions – green banana, yam, dasheen, coco – fried or roasted breadfruit and fried or boiled dumplings.
